As any major honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
